Shadow Detection in Aerial Images

Background:
In aerial images, shadows are usually cast by man-made objects such as buildings and over-pass bridges when they are illuminated by the sun. Cast shadows may be misinterpreted as objects and can also cause failure of aerial image matching. This results in a big challenge in detecting changes in aerial images taken under different lighting conditions.

Definition:

The aim of this project is to detect cast shadows in an aerial image using some a priori information of the image such has location, date and hour it was taken. Using this information we will estimate the direction of the shadow and can and then detect shadow based on this estimation and on properties that differentiate shadowed pixels from non-shadowed pixels.
