Background:
The decomposition of audio signals into perceptually meaningful components is highly desirable for the development of new audio effects on the one hand and as a building block for future efficient audio compression algorithms on the other hand. In the past, there has always been a distinction between parametric coding methods (such as MIDI) and waveform coding (such as MP3). Parametric coding methods offer a wealth of manipulation possibilities for the audio signal. However, these methods are limited by the underlying source models. Waveform coding methods allow high quality reproduction of the original signal but cannot be easily manipulated for perceptual audio effects.

Recently, a new approach for audio decomposition and manipulation has been proposed. This analysis/synthesis approach is an attempt to enable a seamless transition between both approaches. Using this approach high quality audio reproduction is allowed as well as its easy perceptual manipulation.

Definition:

In this project we will investigate the proposed audio analysis/synthesis approach and use it for novel audio manipulation applications.
